Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol shared her experiences on resolving local-level disputes at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg.

During her official visit to Europe, Dangol highlighted KMC’s efforts in ensuring quick, accessible, cost-effective, fair, and accountable dispute resolution mechanisms.

"I had the opportunity to explain how we’ve integrated justice systems that ensure accessibility, cleanliness, fairness, and equality," Dangol said, "We discussed their judicial processes, how they handle cases, and the timelines involved."

The EU had invited her to Belgium to exchange best practices, during which she also visited the CJEU in Luxembourg.

Dangol studied their case registration to decision-making process and observed court proceedings firsthand. She also shared Nepal’s local judicial practices, including mediation and alternative dispute resolution.

"They found it novel that political figures lead local judicial committees," she said, addressing concerns about bias. "Initially, there were doubts, but these have gradually reduced."

Meanwhile, Dangol also shed lights on KMC’s initiatives like women’s networks against gender-based violence and free legal consultations. Dangol interacted with CJEU judges, registrars, and university students, fostering mutual learning on judicial reforms.
