A Promotion Committee meeting held on Thursday recommended DIG Ganesh Thada Magar for promotion to the vacant post of AIG.

This recommendation significantly enhances Thada Magar’s prospects of leading the Armed Police Force (APF) in three years. Currently, the APF has three AIG positions, one of which—the Border Security Directorate—remains vacant following the mandatory retirement of AIG Chandra Prakash Gautam on April 15. The other two AIGs, Narayan Dutta Paudel and Bhansi Raj Dahal, remain in active service.

Incumbent APF Inspector General Raju Aryal will retire on April 17, 2026 after completing his four-year tenure. His successor will be one of the current AIGs (Paudel or Dahal), who will serve as IG for 22 months. After that, the newly promoted AIG (likely Thada Magar) is expected to take over.

Meanwhile, three DIGs—Kamal Giri, Kul Bahadur Nembang, and Shambhu Subedi—who were appointed alongside Thada Magar, will face mandatory retirement on January 7, 2026. Though their tenure was extended by a year last January, those not promoted to AIG will retire.
