Kathmandu University (KU) and the Southasia Institute for History and Philosophy (SiHP) have unveiled a two-year Master of Arts in History and Philosophy (MAHP), designed to cultivate scholars and practitioners equipped to tackle contemporary global challenges.
Announced at a launch event on June 19, the MAHP program merges rigorous humanities training with a focus on Southasia’s socio-ecological context. Emphasizing its relevance, KU Vice Chancellor Prof. Achyut Wagle said, “This course is a response to our turbulent times, shaping thinkers who can navigate crises with humanist perspectives.”

Expressing his views at the event, Yogesh Raj, Academic Director at SiHP, highlighted the program’s mission to “correct anthropocentric biases in humanities while fostering inclusive, pluralistic understandings of Southasia.” The curriculum spans foundational and advanced courses in History and Philosophy, alongside electives in Society, Technology, and Environment.
Open to students from diverse academic backgrounds, applicants must clear the ALT-HuS entrance exam. With fees ranging from NPR 600,000 to -1.2 million, merit and need-based scholarships are available for Nepali candidates.
The first batch begins in October 2025, with applications deadline for July 25, 2025, according to the press note issued by the University.
