Koshi Province has recorded 418 fatalities and 711 serious injuries in road accidents over the past fiscal year (2081/82), according to the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office (NPHSTMO), Itahari.

An additional 8,530 individuals sustained minor injuries. DSP Santosh Shrestha, the acting chief of NPHSTMO, Itahari, attributed the majority of accidents to driver's negligence and traffic rule violations.

Compared to FY 2080/81, accident rates surged by 58%, with fatalities rising by 5% and injuries by 52%. Morang reported the highest death toll (125), followed by Jhapa (95), Sunsari (91), and Udayapur (36).

Authorities penalized 213,695 vehicles for traffic violations, collecting NPR 162.9 million in revenue. Surveillance measures include 932 CCTV cameras, ANPR technology at key checkpoints, and breathalyzer tests to curb drunk driving.

The Traffic Police conducted 26,293 awareness programs, benefiting over 616,000 drivers, students, and pedestrians. Speed monitoring systems, including radar guns and time-card entry checks, have been implemented across 21 locations to enhance safety.

Efforts continue to reduce accidents through stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns, the traffic police said.
