The Nepal Teachers' Federation has staged a sit-in at party office of Nepali Congress in Sanepa, demanding amendments to the proposed School Education Bill in line with past agreements between the Federation and the government.
The Federation staged the protest at the NC party office on Wednesday as part of the first phase of their movement, calling for the bill to be amended according to previous understandings. Federation Chair Laxmi Kishor Subedi informed that they have launched the agitation to pile pressure on the government to address their demands in the Education Bill, which has been passed by the parliamentary committee and reached the House of Representatives.
The Federation has stated they will continue their protest programs until September 5. "We submitted memorandums on August 25, and the sit-in program begins today," said Subedi. "This will continue until September 5, except on the day of the holiday (Janai Purnima). Sit-ins will be held in all rural municipalities and municipalities across the country on August 29. A sit-in at the district coordination units is scheduled for August 31. We will continue our protests and hold discussions with political parties. Until September 5."
The Federation is demanding that the bill be amended as per past agreements made in the House of Representatives and the National Assembly of the Federal Parliament. Although the Federation has demanded that 75% of temporary teacher positions be filled through internal competition and 25% through open competition, the committee has forwarded a bill to the House of Representatives proposing a 60-40 split instead.
