Chandra Kuber Khapung has been appointed as the 32nd Inspector General of Nepal Police.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) Chandra Kuber Khapung has been appointed as the 32nd Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nepal Police.

The Cabinet meeting held in Baluwatar on Friday decided to appoint the senior-most officer AIG Khapung as the IGP.

Khapung is the only AIG from his batch. The other AIGs are junior to him.

The new IGP was appointed a week before the outgoing Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa's mandatory retirement on September 3.

The newly appointed IGP Khapung will assume office on September 4.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will embark on an official visit to China on Saturday and will return only on September 3. Hence, the IGP was appointed today itself.

Khapung is currently the head of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Neapl Police. Earlier, he was working in the CIB even when he was the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), and was posted there as the CIB in-charge after becoming AIG.

Prior to that, Khapung was the police chief of Koshi Province. He joined the Nepal Police as Police Inspector in 2051 BS. Khapung is the third police officer from his batch to become IGP.

Upon passing the inspector's exam in 2051 BS, Khapung was one among 100 candidates who were divided into 'A' and 'B' groups.  Former IGP Basanta Bahadur Kunwar and outgoing IGP Deepak Thapa had also joined the police force as inspectors along with Khapung.

There were 60 candidates in Group A, including Kunwar and Thapa. But on March 19, 1995, only 52 people including Kunwar were appointed and the remaining eight individuals were told to contact later. They were appointed as police inspectors on September 4, 1995. At that time, eight officers including Deepak Thapa were appointed. Among them, IGP Thapa, AIGs Sudip Giri and Tek Bahadur Tamang will also retire on September 3.

Similarly, Khapung's batch AIG Krishna Hari Sharma Pokharel will also retire on August 31, so only Khapung of that batch will remain. Khapung will lead the police organization until November 13, 2025.

Forty people in Group A, including Khapung, were appointed as police inspectors on November 13, 1995 by creating special posts. He will retire in two and a half months if the provision of 30 years of service is maintained.
