Meta, a multinational technology company, which operates social media platforms including Facebook, has shown interest in registering in Nepal.

Meta employees have inquired about registration at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, on the same day the government decided to ban 26 unregistered social media platforms including Facebook.

Gajendra Kumar Thakur, spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications, told Nepalkhabar that they sent the details after Meta employees informally inquired about the details required for registration.

“Meta employees were informally interested in the details required for registration,” Thakur said. “We have sent the details via email.”

Thakur said that the ban will remain in place until Meta officially starts the registration process. “Our decision will be final until registration is done,” he said.

Meta operates Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
