Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has taken the oath of office and secrecy.
President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Karki amidst a ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas, the Office of the President, on Friday evening.
Following the Gen Z uprising that took place on September 8 and 9, the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign and seek refuge with the security agencies.
Karki was unanimously recommended for the position of Prime Minister by the protesting Gen Z groups and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendrea Shah.
Following a series of meetings with Karki and the Chief of Army Staff, Ashok Raj Sigdel, the President eventually decided to appoint her as the Prime Minister of Nepal.
Karki was appointed Prime Minister today with the mandate to hold general elections within six months.
Who is Sushila Karki?
Karki was born at Biratnagar in Morang on June 7, 1952. Karki served as a legal practitioner for 31 years in the legal field, nine years in the Supreme Court.
She comes from a political background. Her grandfather had become a lieutenant during the Rana regime. She joined school in 2015 BS and completed her SLC in 2025 BS from a school in Biratnagar.
Her family had a good term with BP Koirala, and her husband Durga Subedi is a freedom fighter. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in 2028 BS from Mahendra Morang Campus and Master's Degree in Political Science in 2033 BS. Likewise, she completed her Bachelor of Law from Tribhuvan University in 2034 BS.
She then started her legal career as Bar chair at Appellate Court, Biratnagar from 2035 BS. She became a senor advocate in 2061.
On January 22, 2009, she joined the Supreme Court as an ad hoc Justice and became a Justice in 2067 BS.
She assumed the role of Chief Justice on July 11, 2016, becoming the first female Chief Justice of Nepal, and retired on June 7, 2017.
She strongly supported the Gen Z movement and her support eventually paved the way for her to become the first female Prime Minister of Nepal.
