Outgoing Prime Minister and CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has left the Nepali Army barracks. He resigned after the Gen Z protests intensified on September 9, and was airlifted to the Lele Army Barracks in Lalitpur on the afternoon of September 9. Oli returned to his residence on Thursday afternoon after taking refugee for nine days in the army barracks.
Irate protesters set fires to Oli's private home in Balkot, where he had been residing. A new residence has now been arranged for him in Gundu, Bhaktapur. After all arrangements were made, UML leaders and workers moved him to Balkot.
"He has left the army barracks. He will now stay in Gundu for a few days," UML leader Mahesh Bartaula told Nepalkhabar. There is currently a heavy presence of UML leaders and workers at the residence.
On September 9, the GenZ movement staged massive protests across the country, including Kathmandu, demanding removal of social media ban and an end to corruption. The protest turned violent that day.
Oli, who initially refused to resign and used police force, was compelled to flee in an army helicopter on September 9 after protesters picketed Baluwatar. Immediately after his escape, some buildings at the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar were set on fire.
The UML has announced a special program at its central office in Chaysal, which was damaged by Gen Z protesters, on Constitution Day tomorrow. Leader Mahesh Basnet stated that Oli will be presented publicly at this event. However, UML Publicity Department Head Rajendra Gautam, said that Chairman Oli will not participate in any formal programs immediately.
