The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has exported electricity worth around Rs 15 billion rupees since mid-July.
NEA Managing Director Manoj Silwal informed that the surplus electricity, after domestic consumption, is being exported at an average of 1,000 megawatts (MW) daily.
According to him, approximately 15 billion rupees worth of electricity has been exported since mid-July of the current fiscal year 2025-2026 to date.
The electricity is being sold at competitive rates in the Day-Ahead and Real-Time markets of the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and through a bilateral medium-term power purchase agreement to the states of Haryana and Bihar.
Furthermore, 40 MW of electricity is being exported daily to Bangladesh using India's transmission line infrastructure. The electricity trade with India is conducted in Indian Rupees (INR), while the trade with Bangladesh is done in US Dollars (USD). Therefore, the sale of electricity is generating income in both INR and USD.
The NEA has received approval to export 1,165 MW of electricity to India and Bangladesh combined.
