Former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has been sent to Sundhara Central Jail, after the court ordered him to be remanded in custody for trial.
Deepak Shrestha, Information Officer at the Kathmandu District Court, confirmed that an order was issued to send Mahara to Jagannath Dewal, a section of Sundhara Central Jail.
The bench of Judge Harka Bahadur Chhetri sent him to jail, concluding that the initial evidence indicates Mahara's involvement in the gold smuggling.
Mahara is accused of using his influence to get more than nine kilograms of gold, which was smuggled by Chinese national inside vapes (e-cigarettes), released from customs.
A case was filed against Mahara on Monday claiming a restitution amount of Rs. 85,528,374. Cases were already filed against his son, Rahul, and four others earlier.
The court stated that even the statements of Mahara and the other defendants do not show him to be uninvolved in this incident. Previously, when he was arrested for a different case, he was sent to Dillibazar Prison.
Mahara, who had previously been acquitted in this gold smuggling case, was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police on Sunday, and charges were subsequently filed against him.
