Trade deficit of approximately Rs 400 billion in three months

The country has recorded a trade deficit of approximately 400 billion rupees in the initial three months of the current fiscal year 2082/83 BS (2025/26).

As per the foreign trade statistics for the first three months (July 17 to October 17) of the current FY published by the Department of Customs today, imports reached Rs 468 billion 83 million and 300 thousand, while exports totaled Rs 72 billion 782 million and 800 thousand during this period.

Consequently, by the end of Ashoj month or until October 17, Nepal incurred a trade deficit of Rs 395 billion and 300 million in total foreign trade valued at Rs 5 trillion and 486 billion.

Over the last three months, Nepal imported goods worth Rs 258 billion 878 million 200 thousand from neighbouring India and exported goods worth Rs 5 billion 912 million 830 thousand to India, leading to a trade deficit of Rs 199 million 740 thousand.

Likewise, the trade deficit with China in the first three months of the current FY stands at Rs 104 billion and 700 million. Imports from China were worth Rs 104 billion 890 million, while exports were merely Rs 186 million 400 thousand.

Nepal enjoys the largest trade surplus with Denmark. During this period, imports from Denmark amounted to Rs 400 million 100 thousand, while exports reached Rs 289 million 900 thousand. Thus, the trade surplus with Denmark is Rs 249 million 83 thousand.

Nepal also maintains notable trade surpluses with countries such as Germany, Romania, Sweden, and Lebanon. In the past three months, the highest imports were of petroleum products
