CPN (UML) leader Saroj Kumar Yadav has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Madhesh Province. Shortly after being appointed as the Chief Minister, Yadav formed a small Council of Ministers comprising three ministers, each from UML, Sanghiya Samajbadi, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).
The newly appointed ministers were also administered the oath of office at the Panas Hotel in Bardibas by Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari.
Sanghiya Samajbadi and RPP each have one Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) in the Madhesh Provincial Assembly. UML MPA Sharada Thapa informed that the newly appointed ministers have not yet been assigned ministerial portfolios.
The appointed ministers are Lakhan Das from UML, Bimala Ansari from Sanghiya Samajbadi, and Kanchan Bichchha from RPP.
Despite the opposition from parties including Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), Janamat, and CPN (Maoist Center), Province Chief Sumitra Bhandari, in haste this morning, appointed UML leader Yadav as the Chief Minister in accordance with Article 168 (3) of the Constitution, based on the party's status as the largest in the Provincial Assembly.
Former Chief Minister Jitendra Sonal had resigned last Saturday after failing to prove a majority in the Provincial Assembly.
Just yesterday evening, seven parties, including Nepali Congress, submitted a memorandum to the Province Chief demanding that the process for forming a new government be moved forward.
Their argument was that when a Chief Minister resigns, the Province Chief should advance the process for a new government formation in line with Article 168 (2) of the Constitution.
However, despite the opposition from Nepali Congress, JSP, Janamat, and CPN (Maoist Center), the Chief appointed UML leader Yadav as Chief Minister this morning, in accordance with Article 168 (3) of the Constitution, by virtue of being the leader of the largest party in the Provincial Assembly.
Bhandari constituted the Council of Ministers in line with Article 168 (9) of the Constitution based on the recommendation of Chief Minister Yadav.
