Following the humiliating defeat in the House of Representatives (HoR) elections, a debate has begun within CPN-UML regarding leadership change and policy review. Party Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai has said that the leadership should take moral responsibility for the loss, stating that the people rejected both the party's policies and leadership in the elections.
Taking to social media on Monday, leader Bhattarai has made it clear that the main leader is responsible for the party's current situation. He has hinted that Chairman KP Sharma Oli should resign and added that the leadership should be responsible for the loss.
Bhattarai has said that there is public dissatisfaction with the party's policies and leadership and that a massive overhaul is now necessary within the party. He wrote, "There should be a serious discussion on the defeat faced by our party by rising above the principles of prejudice and conspiracy."
Bhattarai has also complained that the party's policies following the September 8 and 9 uprising were wrong and that the leadership did not listen to repeated requests to correct them. He has appealed to the cadres to walk on the path of 'self-criticism, and called on them to come out of the factions of the past and participate in an open debate.
At a time when frustration and anger are rising in the party ranks file, Bhattarai's statement is sure to cause a big stir within UML. "Comrades, we have only fallen, not died. We will rise again through the right policies and leadership."
