The Sher Bahadur Deuba faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) has concluded to move ahead by accepting the verdict given by the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday. The SC on Friday had given a legal status to the Gagan Kumar Thapa-led Nepali Congress (NC), which was elected from the special general convention held in the second week of January.

A meeting convened on Saturday by the NC's outgoing Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka agreed to move on by accepting the SC verdict despite the faction's reservations, said Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, a leader of the Deuba faction.

Bishwakarma stated that it was NC President Gagan Thapa's responsibility to lead the party united. "The responsibility lies on President Gagan Thapa elected from the Special General Convention," Bishwakarma said, adding that President Thapa has the responsibilities to make party united emotionally and expand the party organizationally.

However, NC leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said that though the disputes ended legally, there is a huge issue politically.

Dr Mahat argued that the leaders elected from the Special General Convention should take initiative for party unity.

According to Dr Mahat, the party leaders present in today's meeting voiced to develop a common mechanism through the participation of both factions to convene the 15th general convention.

Earlier on Friday, a division bench of Justices Saranga Subedi and Nripadhwaj Niraula recognized the special general convention of the NC and validated the party leadership emerged through the process.

Challenging the Election Commission's decision to recognize the Thapa leadership, NC's former President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Khadka had filed the petition at the SC.

With the SC verdict on Friday, the writ petition filed by Deuba and Khadka has been dismissed.
