The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has increased the fare of public transport by 5 percent.
Public transport fares have been adjusted via the scientific fare system, which automatically updates rates whenever market fuel prices fluctuate by 5% or more.
According to the DoTM, the fare of passenger vehicles, cargo vehicles operating on hilly roads and cargo vehicles operating on Terai roads has been increased with effect from Wednesday.
Between April 16 and April 25, the average price of diesel surged by Rs 55 per liter, rising from Rs 180.83 to Rs 235.83. This represents a 30.41% increase over the market rate used during the last fare adjustment on April 8. Consequently, DoTM has been forced to revise transport fares upward to account for these rising fuel costs.
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport had given the DoTM its consent to increase the fare on April 25. However, the DoTM has stated that the fare will not increase in the case of electric vehicles.
