Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma has been approved for the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. A meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) convened on Tuesday endorsed his name.
Following the approval, his name will now be recommended to the President.
The Constitutional Council (CC) meeting held on May 7 had decided to recommend Sharma for the post of Chief Justice. He was in the fourth position among the six individuals recommended by the Judicial Council for the post of Chief Justice.
The Constitutional Council picked Sharma, who ranked the fourth in seniority, leaving behind Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla, who was in the first position, Judge Kumar Regmi, and Judge Hari Prasad Phuyal. Sharma is taking charge of the office today itself.
Sharma had been appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court on April 19, 2019.
Sharma, who was born in Parsa on June 18, 1970, will turn 65 on June 17, 2035. The term of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is 6 years. Once sworn in, he will remain at the helm of the Supreme Court until May 2032.
