The Koshi provincial government is preparing to reduce the number of public holidays from two days a week to one. It has sought suggestions from stakeholders and the general public in this regard.
Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has sought opinions on maintaining six working days a week in the ministry and subordinate offices through social media.
Chief Minister Karki has stated that the previous system of giving two days off a week (Saturday and Sunday) does not seem practical and has questioned what it would be like to have only one day off on Saturday.
He has clarified that working only five days a week is not enough and there has been no concrete achievement in saving expenses and fuel as discussed.
Earlier, following the decision and lessons of the federal government, the province has also practiced giving Sundays as well to streamline government services and administrative work.
However, since the system has not had a favorable impact on the service delivery of the general public and there has been no reduction in administrative costs, the provincial government has indicated that it will start the homework of returning to the old system.
The Chief Minister's move is seen as an effort by the provincial government to make its work performance and citizen services more effective. In a request for suggestions on social media, most respondents suggested eliminating Sunday holidays.
