Chinese BYD electric vehicles, imported to Nepal and left stuck along the Jomsom and Corala checkpoints of Nepal-China border over suspected irregularities in imports, have now been granted permission to leave for the destinations.
The Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal's Company 33, Jomsom informed that the vehicles were let go on Sunday and subsequently handed over to the respective sides.
A total of 775 electric vehicles were imported to Nepal via Korala checkpoint during the last week of May and the first week of June. With this, the Mustang Customs Office, Nechung carried out the customs checking of 649 vehicles. The APF later took the vehicles under control, suspecting irregularities in the import procedures.
All the electric vehicles were purchased from China by the Simon Electric.
The Ministry of Finance had formed a three-member committee coordinated by the chief of Evaluation Section under the Policy and Operations Division, Department of Customs, Bhupal Raj Shakya, to investigate the matter. The team, which conducted an on-site monitoring, presented a preliminary conclusion ruling out the possibility of irregularities in the import of vehicles.
The vehicles were handed over to the respective sides on Sunday evening, said APF Deputy Superintendent of Police Bheshraj Giri.
