Lionel Messi kicked off his historic sixth FIFA World Cup campaign in breathtaking fashion, netting a masterful hat-trick to lead reigning champions Argentina to a dominant 3-0 victory over Algeria at the Kansas City stadium. With his three-goal masterclass, the Argentine captain secured three vital points in Group J and equaled German legend Miroslav Klose’s all-time record of 16 World Cup goals.
By stepping onto the pitch, Messi also etched his name into football folklore as the first player in history to feature in six different World Cup tournaments.
The magical display began in the 17th minute when Messi broke the deadlock in trademark style. Picking up the ball just outside the Algerian penalty area, he unleashed a fierce, unstoppable strike that flew into the back of the net to give La Albiceleste a 1-0 lead.
Argentina maintained total control, and Messi put the game entirely out of Algeria's reach with a stellar second-half performance. He struck his second goal in the 60th minute before completing his first-ever World Cup hat-trick in the 76th minute, sending the stadium into absolute delirium.
Once again entered into the tournament as a primary title favorite, Argentina couldn't have asked for a better start to their title defense. All eyes will remain firmly on their legendary captain as he sits just one goal away from standing alone as the greatest goalscorer in World Cup history.
