A 45-year-old man set himself on fire inside his home in Buddhanagar, Kathmandu, early Saturday morning. This marks the third self-immolation attempt reported in the country over the past three days.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu, Ashwin Raut sprinkled petrol on his body and set himself ablaze in his kitchen around 6:15 am. Raut’s wife and son were not home at the time, though preliminary police investigations reveal that Raut had an argument with his son the previous evening.
Raut was rescued by police and rushed to Bir Hospital, where doctors reported he had sustained 50% burns over his body.
The incident follows the tragic death of Ganesh Nepali from Mugu, who succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Nepali had set himself on fire on Thursday at the Department of Passport in Tripureshwar following a dispute with municipal police over motorcycle parking.
In a separate incident on Friday, 35-year-old Bivek Mandal from Sarlahi also attempted self-immolation by dousing himself in petrol. Mandal has been airlifted to Kathmandu for urgent medical treatment, though the motive behind his actions remains unknown. Police investigations into all incidents are currently underway.
