CPN (UML) Standing Committee member Devraj Ghimire has filed his nomination for the post of speaker at the Federal Parliament Secretariat in New Baneshwor today (Wednesday).
UML Vice Chairman Subas Nembang proposed Ghimire as the candidate for the post and his candidacy was seconded by CPN (Maoist Center) lawmaker Hitraj Pandey, Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rab Lamichhane and Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Rajendra Lingden.
Ghimire, who is elected as a lawmaker from Jhapa-2, is considered close to UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli.
According to the agreement reached among the coalition partners, the speaker’s post has gone to the UML.
Earlier, there had been talks that Deputy General Secretary Prithvi Subba Gurung, Secretary Chhabilal Bishwakarma and leader Bidya Bhattarai would become the speaker.
Parties are filing nominations for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives today. The filing of nominations for the post will continue until 4 pm.
The name-list of the candidatures for the post will be published after 4 pm. The election of the speaker is scheduled for Thursday.
There is a constitutional provision that the Speaker should be elected from among the members of parliament within 15 days after the commencement of the HoR.
