Devraj Ghimire sworn-in as Speaker

Newly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire has taken oath of office and secrecy today.

President Bidya Bhandari administered oath of office and secrecy to Ghimire amidst a program organized at Sheetal Niwas.

CPN (UML lawmaker Devraj Ghimire, a common candidate fielded by the ruling coalition, was elected as the Speaker with 167 votes on Thursday.

His rival Ishwari Neupane of Nepali Congress obtained 100 votes. 

The lawmakers including 77 from UML, 32 from CPN (Maoist Center), 20 from Rastriya Swatantra Party, 14 from Rastriya Prajatantra Party, 12 from Janata Samajbadi Party, six from Janamat Party and four from Nagarik Unmukti Party voted for Ghimire.

Similarly, 88 lawmakers from Nepali Congress, 10 from CPN (Unified Socialist) voted for Neupane while four lawmakers abstained from voting.

Ghimire had been a lawmaker of the National Assembly in 2056 BS. A UML Standing Committee member, Ghimire was elected as a Member of the Parliament (MP) to the House of Representatives from Jhapa-2.
