Life has been thrown out of gear in Joshimath after snow and rains lashed out at the already ‘sinking’ town over the last couple of days, The Hindu reported.

Cold weather compounded by heavy snowfall has added further woes to those who were displaced from their houses to shelter homes due to land subsidence.

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted more snow for the town and nearby areas in the coming week.

Uttarakhand's Joshimath saw a rapid sinking of 5.4 cm in just 12 days, according to a report by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Satellite images released by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre show the town sank 5.4 cm between December 27 and January 8.

Besides hotels and business establishments, 678 homes are in danger, the Uttarakhand government has said.

Residents and experts blame the crisis on unplanned and chaotic infrastructure projects in the region, especially a power plant that involved blasts and drilling in the mountains.
