Maoist Center calls office-bearers meeting, to discuss Congress’ proposal

CPN (Maoist Center) is holding its office-bearers meeting this afternoon (February 20), informed General Secretary of the Party, Dev Gurung.

The meeting is said to discuss the presidential poll.

There is a schedule for registering nominations for the presidential election on February 25.

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa is saying that the alliance with the UML will collapse and the old alliance with the Congress will be revived on February 22.

On Sunday, a discussion was held between the Congress General Secretary and the second level leaders of the Maoists in Lalitpur.

Soon after, Congress leaders reached Baluwatar to meet Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who had reached Baliuwatar with other top leaders, proposed to the Prime Minister to help in the Presidential poll.

Prime Minister Dahal said that he would discuss the proposal in the party.

With the stand of not accepting the particular candidate of the other ruling party CPN (UML) for the presidency, Prime Minister Dahal has also prepared to call an all-party meeting.

A source close to Baluwatar has said that they are going to try to forge a national consensus on the president by holding an all-party meeting.

According to the sources, the Congress made the proposal to PM Dahal with the assurance of helping him as the prime minister for the entire five years.

A Congress leader who reached Baluwatar said that Prachanda was positive about the Congress proposal.

On December 25, a seven-party alliance was formed and an agreement was reached to give the presidency to the UML.

However, Prachanda is advocating national consensus after getting the vote of the Congress on January 10.

Accordingly, the Congress has been saying that it should get the President as the largest party in the Parliament.

However, UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, in Biratnagar on Monday, has commented that there is no point in Congress making attempts, asserting the president will be elected from the UML itself.
