An office-bearers' meeting of the CPN (Maoist Center).

The CPN (Maoist Center) has entrusted party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to take a decision on the presidential candidacy.

An office-bearers’ meeting held at the central party office in Paris Danda Monday evening took a decision to this effect, informed Vice Chairman Krishna Bahadur Mahara.

“The meeting reviewed the latest political developments. It decided to seek national consensus to protect national independence, constitution and federal democratic republic,” Vice Chairman Mahara told Nepalkhabar, “It did not discuss names for the candidature. Chairman Prachanda was entrusted to seek consensus for a common presidential candidate,” said Mahara.

As the day (February 25) for filing nomination for the presidential candidacy is fast-approaching, political heavyweights have intensified meetings to forge an agreement on the presidential candidate.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli have held meetings for 23 times to forge an understanding on the common candidate of the president.

However, these meetings have turned futile as Dahal and Oli did not budge an inch from their respective stances.

Dahal has been reiterating that the presidential candidate should be elected through national consensus. On the contrary, UML Chairman Oli has been saying that the president should be elected from the UML in accordance with the agreement reached among the coalition partners.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel met with Prime Minister Dahal at Baluwatar this morning.

Similarly, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba along with top NC leaders held talks with Prime Minister Dahal on Sunday evening. According to sources, Deuba in the meeting formally asked Dahal to extend help in the presidential election.

Election Commission (EC) has set the February 25 for filing nominations and the March 9 for the election of the president.
