Sri Lanka's Colombo Port City will generate around 87,000 job opportunities in the coming few years, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry told parliament on Wednesday.

Sabry said this project will play a major role in making Sri Lanka an economic hub.

The minister said that the Colombo Port City will become the center of an export-oriented economy in the country and Sri Lanka should learn lessons from the past, work to build the economy and make the Port City project a haven for the country's development.

The minister made the remarks in a parliamentary debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act.

Spanning 269 hectares of reclaimed land from the sea, the Port City will comprise five precincts including the Financial District, Central Park Living, Island Living, the Marina and the International Island.
