Tension has flared after the demonstration against the Koshi Province has turned more aggressive and violent in the provincial capital city Biratnagar today.

Police fired four rounds of shots into the air after the demonstrators breached the prohibited zone at Rodshesh Chowk. Security personnel also fired a few rounds of teargas shells to control the protest.

Meanwhile, people have taken four protestors under control. Police used force after the protestors surged towards the Office of the Chief Minister.

Various ethnic-based organizations including Kirat Yakthung Chumlung and Kirat Rai Yayokkha have been staging demonstrations against the ‘Koshi’ as the name for Province 1.

They have been demanding that the Province 1 be named as Limbuwan-Kirat Province by scrapping ‘Koshi.’

The District Administration Office, Morang has designated some parts of Biratnagar as the prohibited zone to curb the demonstrations.
