If you've recently visited Twitter, you may have noticed that the logo was changed from a bird to a dog in the top left corner for a few days.
The dog in question was a Shiba Inu breed, and it also serves as the Dogecoin emblem. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, two internet pranksters, first invented Dogecoin in 2013 as a parody of Bitcoin.
Surprisingly, Dogecoin eventually evolved into a legitimate cryptocurrency, peaking as the seventh-largest electronic currency in the world and reaching a market valuation of over $85 billion in 2021.
For years, Musk has had a bit of a fixation with Dogecoin, which is pronounced "Doje," praising the cryptocurrency online ("One word: Doge," "Dogecoin is the people's crypto," etc.), as well as tweeting hilarious memes.
Musk brought up the currency even during his bizarre Saturday Night Live appearance in August 2022, which caused it to decline by roughly 30%.
When he tweeted about it or mentioned that Tesla would accept Dogecoin for the sale of Tesla merchandise, though, it spiked several other times.
Musk was, however, charged with racketeering in a $258 billion lawsuit brought against him in June 2022 for allegedly promoting Dogecoin.
The timing of this is interesting; last Friday, March 31, Musk's legal team submitted a motion to have the lawsuit dismissed, leading some to speculate that Musk's change of logo on Monday was only a form of humor.
Additionally, when the Doge surfaced on Monday, Musk retweeted a conversation he had on Twitter with a user from March 2022, when he paid $44 billion for the social media company: "Since Twitter has become the de facto public town square, ignoring the norms of free speech profoundly threatens democracy. What ought to be done? "Just buy Twitter... and change the bird logo to a doge," was the user's reply, to which Musk replied, "Haha that would [be] sickkk."
When Musk posted the dog on Monday, he probably had tears of laughter running down his face. Musk then remarked, "As promised."
