By-polls: 64% votes cast in Bara, 63% in Chitwan, 53% in Tanahun

A preliminary report of by-elections held in Tanahun-1, Bara-2 and Chitwan-2 held on Sunday has come out.

About 60 percent of votes were cast in today's elections, informed Surya Prasad Aryal, Assistant Spokesperson of the Election Commission (EC).

According to Aryal, 64 percent of votes were cast in Bara-2, 63 percent in Chitwan-2 while Tanahun-1 witnessed 53 percent turnout of voters.

Earlier Bara had witnessed a 63.56 percent turnout of voters in Bara-2,  67.63 percent in Chitwan 2 and 54.3 percent in Tanahun-1 in the House of Representatives elections held on November 20, last year.

There were 353,247 voters in all the three constituencies, according to the EC.

The votes cast in today’s by-elections were less by two percent compared to the last election in Tanahun-1.

On November 20, 54 percent votes were cast in Tanahun-1. This time, the Election Commission said that more than 53 percent of the votes were here in this constituency.

The by-election was held after Ram Chandra Paudel, a member of the House of Representatives who won the elections from Tanahun-1, was elected as the President.

In the elections held on November 20, senior NC leader Paudel won the seat of the House of Representatives with 25,361 votes. His nearest rival Ek Bahadur Ranamar got 19,981.

Independent candidate Govinda Raj Joshi came third with 6,886 votes, while Rastriya Swatantra Party candidate Bikash Sigdel came fourth with 6,044 votes.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) candidate Binod Kumar Gharti got 2,484 votes.

In Chitwan 2, less votes were cast compared to November's House of Representatives elections. Almost five percent less votes were cast than in the last election.

Chitwan-2 had recorded 67.63 percent of votes cast in the November 20 elections.

According to the Election Commission, less than 63 percent votes were cast this time.

The EC announced the date of the by-election in Chitwan-2 for Sunday as RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane lost his position as an MP over his citizenship dispute.

NC’s Jit Narayan Shrestha, the former district president of Nepali Congress, Ram Prasad Neupane of CPN (UML) and Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane are contesting the elections in Chitwan-2.

Earlier, Lamichhane had won the elections in Chitwan-2 with 49,300 votes in the last elections. His nearest rival Congress leader Umesh Shrestha got 14, 988 votes while UML leader Krishna Bhakta Shrestha got 14,652 votes.

Similarly, Bara-2 witnessed a less turnout of voters compared to the previous elections. According to the EC, 64 percent of votes were cast this time.

This constituency has 44 wards of six local units.

This constituency lay vacant after Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav was elected as the Vice President of Nepal. In this constituency, 64.44 percent votes were cast in the previous elections (November 20, 2022).

There are 34 candidates in Bara-2 including Upendra Yadav from Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), Shiva Chandra Kushwaha from Janamat Party, Purushottam Paudel from UML, Ramesh Kharel from Rastriya Swatantra Party and Arun Gyawali from Aam Janata Party.
