Supreme Court (SC) of Nepal has issued a mandamus in a bid to promote the use of electronic vehicles.
The full text of the mandamus issued by the apex court in the name of the government to endorse the economic bill without hiking the tax of the electronic vehicles has come out.
A joint bench of Justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Sushmalata Mathema had issued a mandamus 10 months ago ordering the government to implement the existing laws and acts to curb pollution.
The mandamus has underscored the need to promote clean energy, thereby reducing the dependency on the petrol and diesel gradually.
The tax rate should be determined so as to control the pollution and ensure the right to live in a clean environment, reads the mandamus.
The Supreme Court has said that even though electronic vehicles are a good option in view of the environment, the batteries will have to be changed in a few years, and the haphazard management of batteries that are not in use should also be considered as they may have a further impact on the environment.
