The Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) has come into effect from today (Monday).

With the MDMS coming into effect, only the registered mobile phones can now operate from now onwards.

Mobile phone sets imported from abroad are automatically registered in the MDMS, while those brought by Nepali migrant workers for personal uses have to be registered.

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has said all the mobile phones which are in operating in Nepal so far have been automatically registered.

But if the incoming mobile phone is not registered, no Nepali SIM will work on it.

Earlier, even after five to six years of preparation, MDMS could not be implemented.

Businessmen were complaining that due to the illegal import of mobile phone sets by some businessmen, there was no fair competition in the market.

MDMS, which was planned but could not be implemented in last August, was implemented from December 30 (2022).

However, this system was halted following Prime Minister's direction after foreign returnees were not allowed to bring more than one mobile phone set.

The government has made a legal provision that those who go for foreign employment with a work permit can carry back home up to two mobile phone sets (they can bring one more except one used by them).

However, those who go for travel and study abroad cannot bring more than one mobile phone set with them.

The NEA has informed that mobile users to check whether their mobile is registered or not from the website.

Nepali people who bring mobile phones from abroad have to register themselves in the MDMS system.

Passport or boarding pass numbers must be inserted while registering the mobile device, according to the NEA.
