The countries who participated in the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) underway in Dubai, paid their attention to mountainous issues raised by Nepal.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ this so during an interaction with the editors at the Office of the Prime Ministers in Singha Durbar on Monday.
Similarly, Prime Minister Prachanda further informed that Nepal has become the leader of the mountainous countries in raising impacts of climate change.
“Nepal has become the leader of the mountainous countries,” said Prachanda who returned to Nepal on Sunday evening, “The issues of mountains raised by Nepal grabbed the attention of the leaders of the international community.”
He claimed that Nepal will receive financial benefits following the COP-28. “Nepal is making a historic success,” he said, “A pressure was exerted on the concerned countries following the round-table meeting convened under the leadership of Nepal.”
During the COP-28, PM Dahal called for collective action to save the mountain and clarified that Nepal has been bearing the direct, unequal and harmful impacts of climate change despite almost zero contributions to global carbon emission.
According to the Paris Agreement, the global community had agreed to contain earth temperature within 1.5 degree Celsius. However, it is estimated that the mountain area temperature will rise beyond 1.8 degree Celsius before 2050. Studies have shown that almost two third portion of the iceberg of the mountains will be melted.
Minister for Forest and Environment Dr Birendra Prasad Mahato said they were very excited for Nepal's issues receiving priority. “Nepal's issues on climate change were established in the conference. Nepal had done its preparation almost six months before the COP-28.”
Prime Minister Dahal who flew to Dubai to the attend the COP-28 on Wednesday returned home on Sunday evening.
