Ruling alliance parties are holding discussions to reach consensus on the seat-sharing of the National Assembly (NA) today.
The leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist) and Janata Samajbadi Party are holding a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Baluwatar at 3 pm to this effect.
Earlier, Nepali Congress and Maoist Center held discussions on the seat-sharing on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
However, the parties have not arrived at consensus, said Chief Whip of Nepali Congress Ramesh Lekhak.
"We have already decided that the party whose seat is going to be vacant will contest the election for the same with the support of the alliance," Lekhak said, “Besides, we are also finalizing the allotment of the eight vacant seats from CPN (UML)."
Of the 20 seats becoming vacant in the National Assembly, the six-year terms of 8 lawmakers from UML, 4 (Nepali Congress), 3 (Maoist Center), 2 (Unified Socialist), 1 from Janata Samajbadi Party and two Independents (Khim Lal Devkota and Dr. Bimala Rai Paudel) are expiring on March 3, 2024.
A constitutional provision has it that the elections must be held one month before the expiry of the term.
The NA elections will be held on January.
