Deuba and Thapa seal midnight deal: Coalition govt to continue

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and party General Secretary Gagan Thapa have agreed to give continuity to the existing ruling alliance.

The agreement was reached between Deuba and Thapa late Monday night on the ground that the alliance garnered the majority of seats in the elections after it formed an electoral alliance, a leader close to Deuba told Nepalkhabar.

President Deuba and General Secretary Thapa struck a deal on the organizational proposal to be presented in the Mahasamiti meeting. While the proposal allows the continuation of the existing alliance, the Congress will contest upcoming elections independently without alliances, the leader said.

For the same reason, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka held a meeting with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal in Baluwatar on Monday evening.

Deuba in the meeting assured Prachanda and Nepal that the existing alliance will continue even though the organizational proposal will be passed by the Mahasamiti meeting of the Congress.

The meeting lasted for an hour.

The source claimed that the General Secretary then agreed to give continuity to the coalition after Deuba agreed to run solo in the upcoming elections.

The Mahasamiti meeting, which is underway at Godawai, has started at 9 am.
