Nepal will sell electricity to Bangladesh during the coming rainy season, said the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising said that Nepal will sell the electricity to Bangladesh from coming June.
A team led by MD Ghising visited Bangladesh on Thursday. During the visit, the meeting between Nepal Electricity Authority and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) headed towards a positive direction and agreement is yet to be signed, according to Ghising.
“An understanding has been reached to supply electricity to Bangladesh during the rainy season,” Ghising told Nepalkhabar, “We have floated a proposal with a fixed price per unit. They have bought time to get it approved from the higher authority.”
The Authority held talks with the Bid Evaluation Committee under the BPDB in Dhaka. In Nepal, it is said that electricity will be purchased during the rainy season when production is more than consumption.
The NEA is making preparations to sign a contract for five years. According to the proposal, the electricity will be exported from June to November. Nepal will transmit electricity to Bangladesh from India's Berhampur-Bheramara via the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur 400 KV inter-country transmission lines.
It is planned to inaugurate electricity export from the prime ministers of Nepal, India and Bangladesh. However, the modality is yet to be finalized, said the Authority.
“The modality of how to inaugurate is still under discussions. With the agreement, the inauguration modality will be decided", Ghising said.
