Argentina and the Netherlands have secured their places in the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 20220.
The Netherlands booked its quarter-finals spot by defeating United States of America 3-1 and Argentina won over Australia with score of 2-1 last night.
The match between Netherlands and US was the first match of the knockout round of 16 that commenced since yesterday (Saturday).
Memphis Depay gave the Netherlands an early lead by striking the first goal of the match at first 10th minute. Likewise, Daley Blind doubled the score during extra time of the first half of the match.
USA tried to make a comeback with Haji Wright's goal at the 76th minute but Denzel Dumfries shattered USA's hopes by striking another goal for the Netherlands during the 81st minute.
In the face-off between Argentina and Australia, Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez scored one goal each for Argentina to kick out Australia from the knockout league.
Messi's goal at the 35th minute gave Argentina the lead and Julian Alvarez doubled that lead at the 57th minute.
At the 77th minute of the match, Argentina's Enzo Fernandez gifted a goal to Australia, stunning his team's goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. With this, Argentina and Australia had a score of 2-1.
The Netherlands are playing the World Cup for the 11th time this year and have been eliminated from the quarter-finals only once in 1994. It has reached the finals three times and the semi-finals twice.
On the other hand, Argentina was eliminated from the round of 16 in World Cup 2018 after facing 4-3 defeat with France. It had reached the final in 2014 but were defeated by Germany. In 2002, Argentina were eliminated from the group stage.
Argentina, who won the title in 1978 and 1986, have not been able to add the title since then.
Now it will face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
