Hong Kong police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after he allegedly got into a fight with his father, who later died from injuries that included an 8cm (3 inch) wound on the head.

The unemployed Nepalese man, 32, is the victim’s elder son. The force said on Saturday that it would detain the suspect overnight for investigation and would not rule out charging him.

A woman alerted the force to the altercation at 1.10am on Saturday at a housing flat on the Ping Fai Path in Yuen Long, where officers found a 50-year-old man unconscious with head injuries.

“The elder son was involved in physically assaulting his father during their altercation,” said Kwan Chun-him, assistant district commander (crime) of Yuen Long district.

“An initial check found that the injury on the victim’s head was eight centimetres in length. It is believed to be caused by a hard object,” Kwan noted, adding the exact cause of death would be determined by the forensic report.

The victim, a construction worker, was taken to Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long and was later pronounced dead at 2.28am.

Police would investigate the motive for the assault from multiple angles, including the relationship between the father and son, whether there were any financial disputes and the mental state of the duo, Kwan said.

He added that there was no previous records of altercations between the victim and his elder son.

The victim lived with his two sons and his wife in the flat. (with inputs from SCMP)
