CPN (UML), the largest party in the ruling alliance, and main opposition Nepali Congress have held discussions on a future political course.

They have initiated discussions toward forming a new alliance for a political stability and constitutional amendments, sources have said.

Following several rounds of meetings between the second-rung leaders of the two parties, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba went to meet with UML Chairman KP Oli at Balkot on Saturday.

Oli welcomed Deuba along with his wife Arzu Deuba Rana with Dahi-Chiura (curd-flattened rice) to his residence, skipping a program organized at Kamaladi to mark Pushpa Lal birth anniversary.

Politics in Nepal has taken a new course following the Deuba-Oli meeting at Balkot, a UML source said.

According to the leader both UML and NC are positive about sharing leadership by one and a half years each for the remaining term of the parliament.

According to sources, Deuba himself proposed Oli to become the Prime Minister. According to the understating reached between the two heavyweights, the NC will have 10 ministries including the Home Ministry while the UML will get nine ministries including the Prime Minister during Oli's premiership, according to the source.

After one and a half years, when the NC will take the helm of the government, according to the same source, some ministries will be exchanged and remaining ones will be given to other fringe parties.

Similarly, the two parties will share three chief ministers each in the province level, according to the understanding.

The two party heads have also held discussions towards amending the constitution, removing existing constitutional hurdles and loopholes through the formation of a high-level constitution advisory commission, said a source close to Deuba.

What is Prachanda's next move?
Prime Minister Prachanda has held a one-on-one meeting two times with Oli following the latter’s meeting with Deuba on Saturday.

Both the meetings did not seem fruitful towards extending alliance in favor of Prachanda.

Oli who reached Madhav Nepal’s residence at Koteshwar to extend the current alliance, did not attend the national convention of CPN (Unified Socialist) led by Nepal. Analysts say that Oli is trying to convey some messages to Prachanda by abstaining from the Unified Socialist’s national convention.

Even though Prachanda has called a meeting of the ruling alliance later in the evening today, it is uncertain whether it will take place or not. There have been speculations whether Oli will attend the meeting.
