The closed session of the 10th national convention of the Unified Socialist is underway at Kamaladi in the federal capital.

The central committee of the party has been dissolved following the formation of the presidium led by senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal.

This presidium will initiate the process of electing the new leadership.

While Madhav Nepal wants to be reelected for one more term as the chairman of the party, Ghanashaym Bhusal is making preparations to field himself for the post advocating for change in leadership.

It’s early to say who commands a majority of supporters at the cadres’ level until the voting is over.

Looking at the central committee, an equal number of central members are seen divided in favor of Bhusal and Nepal, though efforts are being made to elect the leadership through consensus.

If we look at the office-bearers’ level, Beduram Bhusal, Rajendra Prasad Pandey, Jayanti Rai, Keshav Lal Shrestha, Pramesh Hamal, Rajendra Rai, Jagannath Khatiwada, Gangalal Tuladhar are in support of Madhav Nepal.

Similarly, Ghanendra Basnet, Prakash Jwala, Dr. Bijaya Paudel, Garima Shah, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Hari Parajuli are in favor of Ghanshyam Bhusal.

Leaders have said that Ramkumari Jhankri has not made her position clear yet.

Both sides expect her to come to their faction.

The 10th national convention of the Unified Socialist, which kicked off amidst a program at Bhrikuti Mandap on Saturday, will run till July 4.
