Portugal reclaimed their berth in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 clinching a 6-1 win over Switzerland after 16 years.
Held at the Lusail Stadium in Al Daayen, Qatar, Portugal made a flying start after Goncalo Ramos scored the first goal against Switzerland in the 17th minute in the last match of the round of 16 under on Tuesday night.
With this, the matches under the round of 16 have come to an end. Portugal will now play Morocco in the quarter-finals. Earliler, Morocco routed Spain 3-0 in the penalty shootouts in the previous match to enter the quarter-finals.
Portugal scored two goals in the first half and four others in the second half. Ramos made a hat-trick for Portugal's stunning win over Switzerland. He scored goals in the 17the, 51st and 67th minute.
Similarly, captain Pepe scored a goal against Switzerland in the 33rd minute. Raphael Guerreiro made another goal in the 55th minute.
Switzerland's Manuel Akanji scored a goal taking the match 4-1 in the 58th minute. Rafael Leao scored the sixth goal making a 6-1 win over Switzerland.
Portugal had become the third in 1966 and fourth in 2006 in the FIFA World Cup. They were able to make it the round of 16 in 2010. Exited from the knockout stage in 2018, Portugal are aiming to lift the world cup trophy this time.
