The provision of a five-year limit in the investigation of the corruption case has been removed from the bill made to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 BS.

A meeting of the State Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives on Friday decided to remove this provision.

“The proposal to remove the provision of five-year limit in the corruption prevention act has been endorsed by the meeting unanimously,” Chairman of the Committee, Ram Hari Khatiwada told Nepalkhabar.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak said the government is ready to remove the provision of the five-year limit in the corruption act.

Echoing to Home Minister Lekhak’s words, lawmakers opined that the five-year limitation period for corruption cases should be eliminated.

The proposal which was floated in the meeting by Khatiwada was endorsed unanimously.

The five-year limit provision in the corruption case had long been courting controversies. Opposition lawmakers were also questioning on this provision in the meetings of the House of Representatives.

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa had also been advocating against this provision.

The Section 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 BS, had stipulated a provision that if the anti-corruption body does not file a case against a person within five years of the alleged corruption offense, that person is no longer liable for prosecution.
