The Nepali diaspora in Japan has been in a state of shock following the sudden demise of Surendra Oli, a young student who had traveled to the country with the aim of pursuing his higher studies. Oli passed away on Saturday night in Chiba, a city about 40 kilometers east of Tokyo.

The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Japan confirmed the tragic incident, stating that Oli was currently enrolled in a Japanese language school. Local representatives from his birthplace, including Gangadev Rural Municipality officials in Rolpa, Nepal, along with NRNA Japan representatives, have confirmed the loss, which has deeply shaken the tight-knit local Nepali community in Chiba.

Medical professionals are currently investigating the cause of death, with an official autopsy report expected by Tuesday. "Physicians have indicated that the medical report will be provided by tomorrow," an NRNA Japan member stated. "Once the report is issued, we will convene to discuss the subsequent procedures and necessary arrangements." Kul Prasad Subedi, the NRNA coordinator for the Chiba region, is closely coordinating the efforts.

Oli's untimely passing highlights the demanding path taken by a vast majority of Nepali students migrating to Japan. Over 90 percent of these students do not initially enroll in mainstream IT, MBA, or business management courses. Instead, because Japanese universities and vocational colleges mandate advanced N2 or N1 proficiency levels for direct admission, students must first undergo rigorous preparatory language programs. It was during this foundational language schooling phase that Oli's life met the tragic death.

Back in Nepal, the tragedy has left his hometown of Balle Dimurgaira, located in Ward 6 of Gangadev Rural Municipality, Rolpa, in a state of shock. According to Ward Chairman Bharat wali, Surendra had migrated to Japan after completing his Grade 12 education and undergoing initial language training in Kathmandu. Surendra was the second among three brothers; his elder brother Ramesh and younger brother Karna are currently employed as migrant workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The grieving family in Rolpa has urged the concerned body to bring Surendra’s body back home. "His parents wish to repatriate his remains so they can perform the final rites according to traditional Nepali customs," Ward Chairman Wali shared. Meanwhile, condolences have poured in across social media platforms, with members of the worldwide Nepali community expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Surendra.
