ECN unveils by-election schedule; sets Nov 17 for filing nominations

The Election Commission, Nepal (ECN) has made public the schedule for by-elections slated for December 1.

Unveiling the schedule on Thursday, the ECN said the filing of nominations for the candidates will be held on November 17. 

Narayan Sapkota, the spokesperson for the ECN, stated that the list of candidates will be released to the public between 5 and 6 PM on the same day.

Similarly, complaints against the candidates can be filed from 10 AM to 3 PM on November 18. The nomination papers and complaints filed against the candidatures will be examined between 3 PM November 18 and 5 PM November 19. The list of candidates will be published between 5PM to 6PM at the Office of the Election Officer on the same day, spokesperson Sapkota shared.

Likewise, the candidates willing to withdraw their candidacies can do so between 9AM to 1PM on November 20. The final-list of candidates will be published by 3PM on the same day, according to the press note issued by the ECN.

As many as 40 posts are laying vacant across the country following the deaths of people's representatives due to various causes including accidents, disasters and diseases.

Those 40 vacant posts include two heads of district coordination committees, two chairpersons of rural municipalities, one mayor of a municipality, four deputy chairpersons of rural municipalities, one deputy mayor of a municipality, nine ward chairs of rural municipalities and 21 ward chairs of municipalities, according to the ECN.

Of the 40 vacant posts, Nepali Congress had won 25 seats followed by CPN (Maoist Center) with seven seats while CPN (UML) had won six seats. Similarly, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal and one independent candidate had won one seat each in the local elections held on May 13, 2022.
