Ten newborns died in a fire that broke out at Jhansi Medical College in the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

According to the Times of India, 10 newborns died and 16 others sustained injuries in the fire that ripped through the maternity ward after it started at around 10:30 pm yesterday due to a short circuit, authorities said.

The fire was brought under control by six fire brigades by 12:30 am (Saturday). There were a total of 54 newborns at the hospital, according to Indian media outlets.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the casualties of the newborns and directed to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident.
