The government has approved a 10-year plan -- spanning from 2025 to 2035 -- to transform Nepal's energy landscape and increase power generation capacity to 28,500 Megawatts (MW).

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the 'Energy Development Roadmap and Action Plan-2024,' targeting to generate 28,500 MW of electricity by 2035, up from the current 3,200 MW, to end the dependence on imported electricity during winter, and unlock the newer opportunities.

The 10-year plan also aims at positioning Nepal as a regional energy exporter.

According to Energy Minister Deepak Khadka, this is a historic step to unlock Nepal's energy potential and benefit the country and its people.

However, Nepal needs Rs 6232 billion investment to generate 28,500 MW electricity by 2035. "We are open to all modes of investment to expedite projects and ensure the nation reaps the maximum benefits," the minister said, adding that investment from the government, private sector and people in general will be utilized.

The plan that prioritizes reservoir-based hydropower projects also emphasizes the development of transmission, distribution, and substations to facilitate energy export.
