CPN (Maoist Center) has entrusted former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun 'Pasang' with a party responsibility after a hiatus of nine years.

A meeting of the party's office-bearers held on Monday took a decision to this effect, a leader privy to the meeting, told Nepalkhabar.

However, his party rank for this responsibility is yet to be finalized, the leader said. Pun has been attending the meetings in his capacity as the vice chairman.

"Pasang has been assigned to oversee the production sector," the leader said, "Even though talks are underway to provide him with the responsibility equivalent to that of an office-bearer, his position is yet to be finalized."

Pasang has assumed the party responsibility 22 months after he retired as the Vice President and nine years after he refrained from doing politics.

Pasang, who took charge as the Vice President on October 30, 2015 for the first time had been reappointed to the post for the second term.

He had retired as the Vice President on March 20, 2023.  Pasang, born on October 23, 1965 in Rangsi-9, Rolpa, is now 60 years old.

Some leaders in the central committee (CC) meeting of the party convened on January 5-7, 2025 had suggested that someone who has already served as the Vice President of the country should not be involved in active politics.

No production department
The party statute has no provision for a production department. Thirty-five departments include Industry, Finance and Planning, Consumers Welfare and Supply, Agriculture and Land Reform, Treasury and Financial Management, among others.

Out of 35 departments, some are likely to be merged, an office-bearer said. "The necessity of a production department is under discussion, currently," the office-bearer said, "Some departments will be merged while the others will be removed."
