A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night has claimed the lives of 18 people, including 14 women and 3 children, according to the Indian newspaper Dainik Bhaskar. The incident occurred around 9:26 PM between platforms 13, 14, and 15, as crowds gathered to board trains heading to the Mahakumbh Mela.
The Indian Railways has announced a compensation of INR 1 million for the families of the deceased, INR 250,000 for those seriously injured, and INR 100,000 for those with minor injuries.
Reports indicate that the station was already a chock-a-block with devotees since 4 PM due to the Mahakumbh Mela. The situation worsened when three trains bound for Prayagraj were delayed, leading to a surge in the crowd and triggering the stampede. Over 25 people were injured in the chaos.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered an investigation into the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.
This is not the first such tragedy at a railway station during the Mahakumbh Mela. In January 2019, a stampede in Prayagraj resulted in 30 deaths, and in February 2013, another stampede at the same station claimed 36 lives.
