Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has convened the first meeting of the Sagarmatha Sambaad Management Committee today.
Held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singha Durbar, the meeting took stock of the preparations made so far for the first-ever discourse of its kind initiated by Nepal.
"The meeting took stock of the preparations made so far and decided to expedite all preparatory works in coordination with all concerned government agencies and other stakeholders," the Foreign Ministry mentioned on X.
Minister Rana is the chairperson of the committee.
The Nepal government is organizing the first edition of the Sagarmatha Sambaad on May 16-18, 2025 on the theme of ‘Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity.’
Heads of state and government of mountainous and maritime countries, experts working in the field of climate research, representatives of the private sector of national and international level, subject experts, media experts and social influencers will be invited to the dialogue.
The Sagarmatha Sambaad is a multi-stakeholder forum initiated by Nepal to foster dialogue on key global, regional, and national challenges, including climate change, migration, and sustainable development.
Named after the world’s tallest mountain Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest), this Sambaad is in line with Nepal’s consistent policy of promoting global understanding and cooperation through dialogue, consensus building and collaboration.
Even though the idea of Sagarmatha Sambaad was conceived in 2019, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic stalled the Nepal government's initial plans to host the first edition of this dialogue.
Nepal has been according high priority to the climate change issue which has emerged as the topic of global concern over the recent years. It has advanced the Sagarmatha Dialogue to gain global leadership on climate change and advocate for climate justice.
The Sagarmatha Sambaad will be held every two years, according to the decision of the government.

Since COVID-19, four international conferences have been held in the field of climate change, namely COP-26 in Glasgow, COP-27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, COP-28 in Dubai and COP-29 in Baku. Since the climate agenda has become more pronounced, it is inevitable for Nepal to organize the Dialogue.
