Koshi Province is braced for a government reshuffle following an agreement between CPN-UML and Nepali Communist Party (NCP) to form joint governments across five provinces. The deal will see Nepali Congress (NC) exit the ruling coalition, with NC ministers expected to resign shortly.
Under the agreement, CPN-UML will retain leadership of the Koshi government. While Hikmat Kumar Karki currently serves as Chief Minister, speculation is mounting that Til Kumar Menyangbo, deputy leader of the UML provincial parliamentary party, could replace him. Party Chairman KP Sharma Oli is reportedly favorable to Menyangbo’s candidacy, though other senior UML leaders advocate keeping Karki in office due to Koshi’s distinct political landscape.
Chief Minister Karki stated he has received no official notice regarding a leadership change, arguing that continuity would be ideal in the current scenario. However, he affirmed he would abide by party decisions. Meanwhile, Menyangbo expressed readiness to assume the top executive post, noting that developments are moving in a positive direction.
A final decision rests with UML’s top leadership, which remains divided over whether to replace Karki or maintain his tenure.
